Magnesium is Element # 12

1. Magnesium originates from a greek district in Thessaly called magnesia.
- italian= magnesio
-spanish= magnesio
-portuguese= magnesio

2. Magnesium as a pure element. magnesium is a grayish-white, fairly tough metal.

3. The Magnesium isotopes Mg-25 and Mg-26 . no electrons and 12 protons. average atomic mass = 24.3051. common isotopes---->
24Mg 23.9850 78.99%
25Mg 24.9858 10.00%
26Mg 25.9826 11.01%

4. the element of magnesium has 12 electrons in a nutural atom. A Mg atom is neutral so its numbers of protons and electrons are the same. magnesium has 3 shells of electons with two electrons in shell one, eight in shell two, and two more in shell three.

5. the atomic radius in meters of magnesium is 1.5e-10.

7. there are 43.2 kilograms of magnesium in my body.
  universe----600,000 ppb by weight
  earth's crust----- 29,000,000

8. compounds

  - Magnesium dihydride: MgH2

   - Magnesium dichloride: MgCl2

   - Magnesium diiodide: MgI2

9. Magnesium was discovered by Sir Humphrey Davy at 1755 in England. In 1618 a farmer at Epsom in England attempted to give his cows water from a well. This they refused to drink because of the water's bitter taste. However the farmer noticed that the water seemed to heal scratches and rashes. The fame of Epsom salts spread. Eventually they were recognised to be magnesium sulphate, MgSO4.

10. magnesium is used in flares and pyrotechnics, including incendiary bombs. It was used in flash photography. it is lighter than aluminium, and is used in alloys used for aircraft, car engine casings, and missile construction.the hydroxide (milk of magnesia), chloride, sulphate (Epsom salts), and the citrate are used in medicine. magnesium oxide is refractory and used as bricks and liners in furnace. used in computers for radio-frequency shielding

11. Magnesium is the 8th most abundant element in the earths crust.
